Activity 3: “I Have a Dream”

At a young age, Rosa park's parents divorced. After the divorce, rosa and her mother moved to pine level Alabama, where they stayed with rosa's grandparents. While living with her grandparents, Rosa saw lots of Americans treating African Americans badly. But it also taught her how to be strong! Such as, one day her grandfather protected their farm from a group of men called the Ku Klux klan. The Ku Klux Klan was known for killing African Americans. At school, things were not fair either as a child. The schools she went to were segregated, that meant that African American students were not allowed to go to school with white students. She loved school but stopped school in 11th grade to help her sick mother. On December 1st, 1955 the local busses were also segregated! The whites would be in front of the bus and the African Americans will go at the front of the bus to pay but then leave the bus to go to the back of the bus. One day the bus driver told her to move so that one of the white customers could have her seat. After thinking about what the bus driver had said rosa was tired of being treated unfairly so she said NO! After that, the bus driver got her arrested!! That made a lot of people mad! Then the people both refused to go on buses to move around town. The boycott lasted several months and when the busses sat empty the city had to do something! The boycott ended on December 20, 1956, after the supreme court said they couldn't treat African American's differently.

  1. Hi Ashaswi,

    Me again! :)

You've shared some really interesting information about some of the important events in Rosa Parks' life. Isn't it awful that people can be treated so badly based solely on the colour of their skin? Rosa was very brave to stand up for what she believed in. Is there anything that you strongly believe in?

Have a wonderful day, Ashaswi. Remember, if you go back and comment on other peoples' Summer Learning Journey blog posts you'll receive an extra two points per quality comment! :)

    Bye for now,

    Mikey
